Do I really need to pre-drill hardwoods like Kwila?
Mate, if you’re asking that, you’ve clearly never snapped a screw off halfway into a Kwila board and had to dig it out with a chisel and some colourful language.
Hardwoods like Kwila, Vitex, and Garapa aren’t just tough — they’re stubborn. Driving a screw straight into one of these dense beauties without pre-drilling is like trying to push a nail into a brick wall with your forehead. You’ll either strip the head, snap the screw, or split the timber — none of which will win you any points at smoko.
Pre-drilling a pilot hole (and even a countersink, if you’re feeling flash) saves your bits, your fasteners, and your sanity. It helps the screw bite clean, stops the timber from cracking, and gives you a way cleaner finish. Plus, your drill won't sound like it’s about to tap out halfway through the job.
