Can wood be fireproof?
Not quite, mate; but not all timber goes up like a pile of dry kindling either.
Some hardwoods, like ironbark and blackbutt, are naturally fire-resistant thanks to their sheer density. They're like the muscle cars of the timber world - heavy, slow to burn, and tough as old boots.
That doesn't mean they’re flameproof, but they’ll hold up better when things heat up.
Now, here at WBS Henderson, we stock Kwila, of which you might also know it as Merbau. It’s not fireproof, but it is a slow burner. That, plus its natural resistance to decay and termites, makes it a smart pick for decks in bushfire-prone areas. Add in its strength, durability, and that rich reddish-brown colour, and you’ve got a timber that doesn’t just look sharp, it’s built to last.
And if you really want to crank up the fire resistance, there are treatments out there that can boost your timber’s chances when sparks fly.
Just remember: no timber is completely fireproof, but choosing the right species, and using it right, makes a bloody big difference.
