You’ve probably done it — said something a bit risky, then rapped your knuckles on the nearest bit of timber like it’s some sort of magic spell. But where’d that come from?
Turns out, the whole “knock on wood” thing goes way back. Old folklore reckoned that trees were home to spirits — friendly ones, mind you — and giving the trunk a quick knock was like saying, “Cheers, mate. Keep the bad luck away.” Some reckon it scared off evil. Others say it was a humble way of not tempting fate by bragging too soon. Either way, it stuck.
